Positive Communication – Team Building Activity

Purpose:
Enhance open communication, active listening, and understanding among team members to foster a more cohesive and collaborative work environment.
The Activity:
- Gather the team in a comfortable, distraction-free setting.
- Have team members pair up with someone they don’t know well for one-on-one conversations.
- One person in each pair shares a recent challenge or project they are working on. Keep sharing brief—around 1-2 minutes per person.
- The listening partner practices active listening—making eye contact, nodding, and refraining from interrupting in any way.
- After the first person finishes, the listener says, “Thank you for sharing.”
- Switch roles so each person has a chance to share and listen.
- After everyone has had a chance to share, bring the entire team back together and ask: “What is the meaning of this activity?” Allow anyone who wants to share to do so briefly.
Benefits of This Team Building Activity:
- Strengthens communication skills and encourages active listening.
- Builds empathy by understanding colleagues’ experiences and viewpoints.
- Fosters trust through open and honest dialogue.
- Promotes a culture of support and collaboration, improving overall team effectiveness.
